ABOUT
THE GOVERNOR
Kate Mathews began
Higher Park Farm nine years ago. She has been involved in the riding
school industry for 15 years starting as a small and fairly hopeless little
helper! Over time she became more depended on and eventually part of the
furniture. With plenty of gaps in which to be a sheep shearer in New
Zealand for a year and to a ride a
Harley round 28 states of the USA for
19,000 miles, and various other delinquent travels, she always came back
to her horses. She worked freelance as an instructor and schooling babies.

In 1982 Kate was approached to be a groom for six Andalusian Stallions for
the film 'Legends'. "The amount of polystyrene unicorn horns we went
through was unbelievable!"
From then on she groomed for many films including 'Hamlet' with Mel
Gibson, 'Henry V' with Kenneth Branagh and 'Much Ado About Nothing' with
Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington.

She taught the actors to ride, trained the horses to go onto sets, and spent most of her time dressed up as a man filling up the scenery. Kate loved it and still does little bits and pieces now and again, she was a Doonesman in 'Lorna Doone' for the BBC
in 2000, but she doesn't really have the time anymore with the business and competitions.

Kate competes at eventing with her two boys,' Ozzie' (pictured) and her
big baby 'Shrek'. She trains with them every day and they can always be
found at the yard causing mischief !!! . She has taken quite a few
youngsters to intermediate
level and trains with them every day.
Kate's life is Higher Park Farm and she tries to make it a really happy,
friendly place to be, her philosophy is - if she wants to be there it must
be a nice place and life is too short not to be laughing.
